Game Informer confirms 170+ animal species in GTA 6 — from alligators in convenience stores to rhesus monkeys. Here's every confirmed creature and what the wildlife system means for gameplay.
The alligator walks into the convenience store like it owns the place. Because in Leonida, it kind of does.
That single shot from Trailer 1 — a gator strolling through automatic doors past the snack aisle — told us more about GTA 6's ambitions than any car chase could. Rockstar isn't just putting animals in the background this time. They're building an ecosystem. And according to Game Informer's September 2026 cover story, that ecosystem has more than 170 species.
Let that number sit for a second. Red Dead Redemption 2, a game set almost entirely in wilderness, shipped with "over 200 species" as a headline feature. GTA 6 is getting close to that in a game about crime in a city.
How many animals are actually in GTA 6?
The headline number comes from Game Informer: 170+ animal species, including more than 60 types of birds and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish and reptiles. Four species got named in the reporting: manatees, flamingos, pelicans, and alligators.
Game Informer's write-up goes deeper. Native animals coexist with invasive species — green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, even rhesus macaque monkeys (yes, Florida really has monkeys). Several species have never appeared in a Rockstar game before. Animals get new visual tech: iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, feather types, plus new hair and fur systems.
And here's the detail that has completionists already sweating: you can track certain animals categorized as Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary. Rockstar is keeping those identities secret.
| Animal | Where Seen | Notes |
|--------|-----------|-------|
| Alligators | Everglades, swamps | Most prominent wildlife |
| Flamingos | Wetlands, coastal areas | Iconic Florida birds |
| Deer | Rural areas | Seen in trailer footage |
| Various birds | Throughout Leonida | Adds atmosphere |
What animals have we actually seen?
Community frame-by-frame analysis — credit largely to GTAForums user PauloJz — has identified these species directly in trailer footage:
Reptiles: American alligator, green iguana, loggerhead sea turtle, Burmese python. The python is a great detail — spotted hiding in tall grass in Trailer 1, and apparently kept as a pet by Jason and Lucia in their Keys home in Trailer 2.
Marine life: Bottlenose dolphin, tiger shark, West Indian manatee. Three sea turtles visible near a yacht around 0:10 in Trailer 1.
Birds: American flamingo, brown pelican, herring gull, roseate spoonbill, mottled duck. One Game Informer screenshot shows a Grassrivers wetland at sunrise packed with wildlife: an alligator in the water, a pink roseate spoonbill taking off, a white-tailed buck, a white crane, wood storks, flocks of birds overhead. All in one frame.
Land mammals: Key deer, wild boar, Florida panther, bobcat, raccoon, armadillo, otter, beaver. Dogs of every variety — Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, Chihuahua. Even a miniature pinscher.
The weird Florida stuff: Cane toads. Rhesus macaques. Feral cats. This is the invasive-species angle, and it's pure Florida.
Why are alligators everywhere?

Alligators aren't tucked away in the swamps. Trailer footage shows them in suburban neighborhoods, residential swimming pools, and gas stations. The convenience store scene is exaggerated for effect, but it's rooted in real Florida news stories that happen often enough to be a running national joke.
Rockstar leaned all the way in. Leonida's official state seal depicts an alligator attacking a person — a darkly funny nod to Florida's real state seal. When your state seal is a gator mauling someone, you know the tone.
Grassrivers, the Everglades-inspired wetland region, is the wildlife capital. Rockstar's own description calls it Leonida's "untamable jewel," warning that alligators are the region's most famous danger but not necessarily its worst. Burmese pythons, cougars, wild boar, and venomous snakes all live here too.
Can you hunt? Can you fish?
Hunting hasn't been detailed in anything Rockstar has shown. But one Game Informer screenshot shows a man with a scoped rifle on his back, sitting on an ATV and watching deer drink at a forest stream. That's going to fuel speculation until Rockstar answers it directly.
Fishing looks more certain. Bass fishing is on the confirmed activity list, alongside kayaking, scuba diving, air boating, and jet skiing. Jason's Lurepredator L35P fishing boat showed up in the Extended Look, tied to his daily life.
There's also a leaked reference to POACH — Protection of Animals and Controlled Hunting — an in-game organization spotted in leaked files. If accurate, wildlife management could be woven into missions rather than animals existing as scenery. Treat that as a credible but unverified leak.
The RDR2 interaction system is back

The left-trigger NPC interaction system from Red Dead Redemption 2 returns — and this time it works on animals. You can greet, scold, or study wildlife. Greeting a dog seemingly granted a stat perk in the Extended Look footage, which might be the most Rockstar sentence ever written.
There's a zoo
Buried in the activity confirmations: GTA 6 has at least one visitable zoo. Which animals are in it is currently unknown. But in a game with 170+ species, a zoo feels less like a side attraction and more like a showcase.
Explore where these animals live in our GTA 6 Map Guide. For map size comparisons, see Leonida Map Size vs GTA 5 & RDR2.
What this means for the game
Here's what excites us. RDR2 proved Rockstar can make wildlife feel alive — animals with routines, predator-prey behavior, reactions to the player. Now they're bringing that philosophy to a modern setting where the wildlife is weirder, more dangerous, and funnier. An alligator in a convenience store isn't just a visual gag. It's a statement of intent: in Leonida, nature doesn't stay where you put it.
Confirmed vs. speculation: The 170+ species count, 60+ birds, 30+ land mammals, Rare/Discoverable/Legendary tracking categories, RDR2-style animal interaction, and the zoo are confirmed via Game Informer and Rockstar materials. The specific species list beyond the named four comes from community trailer analysis — solid but unofficial. POACH, hunting mechanics, and fishing income are unconfirmed. We'll know the full roster when the game launches November 19, 2026.
