Rockstar says Leonida is twice GTA 5 and three times RDR2. But what does that actually mean in square kilometers? Every confirmed claim and the math behind them.
How big is the GTA 6 map? It's the question every fan asks, and Rockstar's answer has been characteristically precise about being imprecise.
No official square-kilometer figure exists. What we have instead is better: specific comparisons from Rockstar's own senior developers, reported in Game Informer and relayed through creator previews. Let's lay out every number, who said it, and what the math actually means.
What Rockstar actually said
Two developers, two key statements.
Aaron Garbut, Rockstar's art co-president, told Game Informer (September 2026 issue) that Leonida is roughly twice the size of the GTA 5 map. He didn't give a kilometer figure. He also called it the biggest map Rockstar has ever built "by some degree" — which includes Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rob Nelson of Rockstar North went further in creator preview comments: the map is twice the size of GTA 5 and three times the playable area of RDR2. Then he broke it down: Vice City alone is about twice GTA 5's Los Santos, and the developed areas outside the city are roughly 11 times the developed space outside Los Santos.
Those are the confirmed claims. Everything below is arithmetic based on them.
The math: what "twice GTA 5" means in kilometers
GTA 5's map is generally measured at 75-80 square kilometers including water, with roughly 48-50 square kilometers of land.
Double the total: ~150-160 sq km. Double the land: ~96-100 sq km.
Here's the catch Nelson's statement doesn't resolve: did he mean total area or land only? Both calculations circulate, and neither is confirmed as what he meant. The honest range is somewhere between 100 and 160 square kilometers depending on how you count water.
The community measurement: 125 sq km of land
The GTA VI mapping community — the folks doing frame-by-frame trailer reconstruction — has its own number. The mapping project led by GTA Forums user lxr estimates roughly 125 square kilometers of land for Leonida. By their math, that's about 2.5 times the landmass of GTA 5.
That's a fan measurement, not an official figure. But it's built on trailer landmarks, Florida geography matching, and a genuinely obsessive methodology. Take it as the best unofficial estimate available.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5 vs RDR2: the full comparison
| | GTA 5 | RDR2 | GTA 6 (Leonida) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total area | ~75-80 sq km | ~75-85 sq km | ~150-160 sq km (est.) |
| Land area | ~48-50 sq km | ~75 sq km (est.) | ~96-125 sq km (est.) |
| Urban core | Los Santos | Saint Denis | Vice City (~2x Los Santos) |
| Regions | City + desert + mountains | 5 states | 6 distinct regions |
| Setting | Southern California | American frontier | Florida |
The RDR2 comparison deserves a note. RDR2's map was only slightly bigger than GTA 5's — the games are in the same ballpark. So when Nelson says Leonida is three times RDR2's playable area, that's a massive jump. It's the single most aggressive scale claim Rockstar has ever made.
| Game | Map Size (approx.) | Setting |
|------|-------------------|---------|
| GTA 6 (Leonida) | ~125 sq km land | Florida-inspired state |
| GTA 5 (San Andreas) | ~75 sq km | Southern California-inspired |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | ~75 sq km | American frontier |
Why raw size isn't the point
Here's what Garbut actually emphasized in the Game Informer piece, and it's more interesting than any kilometer count:
"This new world is different. We obsessed about every part — the rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between to the point we hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors, and you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out."
Translation: Rockstar isn't just making a bigger map. They're making a denser one. More enterable interiors than any previous GTA. Buildings that feel real inside and out. That's the "critical mass" quote, and it's the one that matters.
The six regions tell the same story. Vice City (urban core, 2x Los Santos). Leonida Keys (island chain). Grassrivers (wetlands). Port Gellhorn (faded port town). Ambrosia (industrial). Mount Kalaga (wilderness). That's not just "bigger" — it's six different games' worth of geography stitched together.
What the trailers show about scale

You can feel the size in the footage. Trailer 1's Vice Beach montage shows a dense urban beachfront. Trailer 2 pulls back to wetlands, keys, and farmland. The Extended Look showed transit systems — buses, trains, light rail, taxis, and the RydeMe ride-hailing app — because in a map this size, you need ways to get around that aren't just driving.
There's no universal fast travel. That design choice only makes sense if the map is big enough to make travel itself part of the experience.

The bottom line
The confirmed facts: twice GTA 5 (Garbut), three times RDR2's playable area (Nelson), Vice City alone twice Los Santos, 11x the developed space outside the city. The estimates: 100-160 sq km depending on methodology.
But the number I'd actually pay attention to isn't a kilometer count. It's Garbut's "critical mass" — the point where interiors, alleys, and rooftops hit a density that makes the world feel real. That's not measurable in square kilometers. And it's the thing that'll determine whether Leonida feels twice as big or ten times as alive.
